The Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL)
The ACFL is one of the great treasures of Fidalgo Island, and includes 2,950 acres within the City of Anacortes, stretching from Little Cranberry Lake to Mt Erie. it's owned by the City of Anacortes and managed by the Parks and Recreation Department. The ACFL encompass a mosaic of forest, wetlands, lakes and meadows and include over 50 miles of trails that can be enjoyed by hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders and dirt bikers. The forest is almost all a second-growth forest, although logging ceased long ago. There are areas with some very large "old-growth" trees, some exceeding 7' in diameter. The look and feel of the forest is heavily influenced by beavers, the relatively wet and mild climate, and stormy winter weather.
